Workforce Wellness Supports

The Center for Child and Family Health and NCDHHS are partnering to provide trauma-informed workforce wellness supports to the child welfare, adult protective services, and mental health workforce in the 27 western NC counties impacted by Hurricane Helene. We aim to strengthen workforce resilience and trauma-informed capacity through training, consultation, and peer support on trauma-informed approaches to individual and organizational wellness.

Workforce wellness supports may include:

  • Supervision supports and techniques
  • Strategies for improved morale/connection among co-workers
  • Connection to community supports
  • Psychoeducation on trauma, burnout, compassion fatigue (CF), and secondary traumatic stress (STS)
  • Grief support
  • Case consultation/support
  • Critical incident diffusing/informal debriefing/low-impact debriefing

Project Partners

This project is funded through the NCDHHS Division of Social Services. We work in partnership with agency leaders from the Division of Social Services and Division of Mental Health, and in collaboration with Vaya Health/Hope4NC and Positive Childhood Alliance (PCA). Project activities support direct line staff, supervisors, and agency leaders across these organizations for comprehensive workforce wellness and system recovery.

Training

The Center for Child & Family Health provides training in trauma-informed practice, equipping providers and agencies with strategies, practices, and interventions to effectively address trauma. We will offer three (3) virtual trainings in Spring 2026 – see below for details.

In this three‑part training series, participants will learn practical early‑response strategies, organizational tools to reduce secondary traumatic stress, and individual wellness practices that strengthen resilience during long‑term recovery. Across all sessions, the series emphasizes trauma‑informed approaches, supportive supervision, peer connection, and sustainable personal well‑being for helping professionals.

Agency leaders may also connect with us for agency- or team-specific workshops incorporating any of the topics above. Training topics and content may vary based on emergent needs.

Please Register Here to sign up for one or more of our scheduled trainings. Participation in each session is encouraged, but not required.

Upcoming Trainings

Friday, February 6 | 12pm-1pm

Stabilizing the Workforce: Foundations for Trauma-Informed Conversations
Friday, February 6 | 12pm-1pm

We will discuss the realities of workplace stress post-disaster. We will start by sharing practical strategies for supporting workers, with a focus on compassionate communication, team grounding, and recognizing when staff may need additional support. This training introduces low‑impact debriefing (TEND, 2026), a trauma-informed technique for sharing and processing the difficult stories that we encounter in our work.

Friday, March 20 | 12pm-1pm

Resilient Workplaces: Organizational Tools for Promoting Morale and Connection
Friday, March 20 | 12pm-1pm

Human service organizations play a central role in shaping how staff cope with the ongoing stress of disaster recovery and chronic exposure to trauma. This training focuses on organizational strategies to reduce secondary traumatic stress (STS), increase morale, and strengthen supervision practices. Special emphasis is placed on fostering psychological safety, improving team cohesion, and using supervision as a protective factor. Leaders and supervisors will leave with actionable tools to cultivate a resilient, connected, and supportive workforce environment.

Friday, May 8 | 12pm-1pm

Wellness Approaches You Can Use: Skills for Renewing Energy, Purpose, and Connection
Friday, May 8 | 12pm-1pm

Sustaining well‑being during disaster recovery requires exploration and testing of personal strategies and strong peer and community networks. This training equips staff with realistic, accessible tools to support their own health—emotionally, physically, and socially—while working in high‑stress environments. Participants will explore methods for grounding, self‑regulation, boundary setting, and building peer connections. The session also highlights community resources and culturally relevant practices that can reinforce personal resilience after Hurricane Helene.

Managing Holiday Stress
Wednesday, December 17, 2025 | 2pm

The holidays can be stressful for people in the best of circumstances, but there are some unique aspects of preparing for and celebrating winter holidays for people who have experienced storms like Hurricane Helene. This live workshop will be recorded and made available to view for a limited time.

In this 1-hour workshop, we will:

  • Identify holiday stressors for you and the families you work alongside
  • Share strategies you can use for managing stress responses around the holidays
  • Practice wellness skills for navigating the holiday season

Support Groups

In partnership with Southmountain Children and Family Services (Morganton, NC), we are offering role-specific support groups for direct line workers, supervisors, and agency leaders in need of peer support. Support groups offer a confidential space for participants to learn and practice coping strategies, receive psychoeducational resources, and share and reflect on experiences in a confidential setting. Support groups are offered virtually (dates/times tbd). Participants are encouraged to join as often as they are able.

Please Register Here to indicate your interest in joining a support group. A member of our team will reach out with additional information.
